As sustainability becomes a priority for businesses and consumers, the materials used every day are getting a closer look. One term that often appears in eco-friendly conversations is post-consumer recycled paper. But what does it mean?
Post-consumer recycled (PCR) paper is paper that has already been used and discarded by consumers, then recycled. Items like office paper, newspapers, magazines, mail, cardboard boxes, and paper packaging. After these products have been used and put in a recycling bin, they get processed and turned into new paper products.
Pre-consumer recycled paper is made from manufacturing scraps and waste that never reached consumers. While both reduce waste, post-consumer recycled paper has a greater environmental impact because it directly addresses consumer waste.
How Is Post-Consumer Recycled Paper Made?
Starting with collection, used paper products are gathered and then sorted by type and quality. Next, the paper is pulped by mixing it with water and breaking it down into fibres. It's also cleaned to remove any ink, glue, and other non-paper materials. The water and paper mix is then off to be formed into its new product.
Post-consumer recycled paper is widely used across many industries. It can be found in office printer paper, notebooks, envelopes, paper towels, toilet paper, and packaging materials. Using recycled paper sends a message of sustainability and reusability.
