PFAS, or “Forever Chemicals”

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) cover a large group of human-made substances that are extremely persistent. Used in a variety of products in everyday life and in industrial settings, it makes them almost impossible to avoid.

PFAS are a group of more than 4,700 substances. These chemicals get the name “forever chemicals” because they don’t break down in the environment or in the body. They’re found in everyday items like food packaging, non-stick cookware, clothing, and cosmetics. They are also utilized in firefighting foams, oil/water repellents, and other industrial products.

As research continues to find the full impact of PFAS exposure on humans and the environment, efforts to regulate and find safer alternatives will be crucial in reducing their presence and long-term effects on lives. To minimize your exposure, doing some research on products you use daily and checking labels for PFAS-free options can help reduce the amount of PFAS in your life.
