Nail Care Essentials

Despite being one of the most fundamental nail care steps, nail filing is often hurried or done incorrectly.  Alongside shaping, proper filing helps keep the nails from breaking, peeling, and splitting. When done properly, nail filing promotes healthy nail growth and maintains neat, manicured nails.

Filing back and forth is one of the most common mistakes people make. The nail becomes weaker and splits because of this sawing motion. Instead, file your nails in a single direction, working your way from the outside edge to the centre. Wet nails are softer and more vulnerable to damage, so they should always be filed when dry. If you're looking to just cut your nails, having them a little wet makes for easier trimming, and then you can file them when they're dry.

Nail health is also affected by the choice of nail shape. While sharper shapes like almond or coffin call for stronger nails or enhancements, rounded and squoval shapes are the most resilient and appropriate for daily wear.

For natural nails, nail filing should be done once every one to two weeks, but not too frequently. Proper filing is a straightforward but effective method for keeping strong, healthy, and beautiful nails.
