How to Sharpen Knives

  • Nov 22, 2023

Whether you are a newbie to the kitchen or a pro chef, learning to sharpen your dull kitchen knives is a skill that can help you in the long run. Despite how it sounds, a dull knife can be pretty dangerous. It causes you to push down harder and you might accidently cut yourself. A sharp knife is ideal because it cuts the item smoothly without much force.

Here are two different ways to sharpen your knives:

Knife Sharpener

The most common and less intimidating way to sharpen your knives is to use a tabletop knife sharpener. They are a small device with different slits that you run the blade through to sharpen. You repeat this process a few times and then wipe the blade clean. It is not as precise as other methods but it will get the job done.

Whetstone

There is a stone called a whetstone that you can use to sharpen blades. First, you take the stone and soak it in water. Then you glide one side of the blade over the stone a few times. You repeat the same motion on the other side of the blade. Flip the stone over and do the exact same thing. Investing in a stone might be a good choice if you enjoy cooking every day and have solid knife skills.

A stone is also a good option because its more precise and has different grits or textures on the sides. Some whetstones need to be wet while others don’t. For beginners, a wet-use stone would be the best option.
