How to Care for Your Cap

Summer is starting, and it's time to break out the caps if they were ever put away in the first place. If your cap’s been out year-round, it might be time for some TLC, but haphazardly throwing your cap in the washing machine could result in a floppy, crinkled, and otherwise sad-looking cap. Below are some tips for cleaning caps to make them look brand new.

·         Make sure to read the care tag before cleaning.

·         Small stains can be tackled with a stain remover (avoid ones with bleach), some light brushing, and a bit of water.

·         Be careful around any logos to avoid damaging them.

·         Soak in cool, soapy water for an hour, then rinse with warm water and pat dry with a towel.

·         Don’t soak your vintage caps; brims used to be made of cardboard and would disintegrate with water (if you flick the brim and it sounds hollow, it's probably carboard).

·         Air dry your cap after washing to avoid shrinking or misshaping that could happen in the dryer. Putting it on a container or a mannequin head will help keep its shape.

·         Wool hats are notoriously delicate and need extra care.
