How Recycled Polyester is Made

In order to get recycled polyester fabric, the materials need to be collected, usually in the form of plastic bottles. These bottles are made from polyethylene terephthalate, commonly known as PET plastic. The most common way of recycling these bottles is through mechanical recycling.

First, the bottles are sorted by colour, have any labels removed, washed, dried, and then shredded. The bottles are then shredded and undergo a quality assurance check. The bits of plastic are then turned into pellets and are ready to be molded into a multitude of different products.

In the case of making polyester fabric, the pellets are loaded into a hopper and heated, then extruded to create long strands. These stands are sent through a crimping machine to give them a fluffy texture that more closely resembles fabric then put onto spools for transport. These stands can the be dyed any colour and knitted into fabric.

Our featured product this week is the Adidas 3-Stripe Full-Zip Jacket, which contains 94% recycled polyester. Call us to place your order at 306.249.4318. We are happy to address any questions you may have.
