How Golf Courses Got Their Design

The modern golf course has come a long way from its first iteration. In the 19th century, golf courses weren’t made but found. Links are the oldest kind of golf course; they were developed in Scotland and were usually built on sandy coastland.

As golf popularized in the later 19th century, it was starting to be played on less suitable terrain, and often some landscaping was necessary. This task was often overseen by professional golfers. With early golf balls being notoriously unforgiving, the courses were designed to punish any shots that were less than perfect.

As the 20th century came around and improved golf balls were introduced, golf courses became more forgiving. These new courses allowed golfers to choose their own level of risk and reward. With the ability to choose between long, riskier shots that cut over hazards or shorter, safer shots. A modern golf course has a variety of styles, ranging from being more strategic, difficult, or risk-rewarding.
