Everyone’s taking a bit more time to look at labels and make the effort to buy Canadian, but deciphering all those labels can be daunting, and it can be hard to know if what you’re buying really is Canadian. Below are some tips to help you make informed choices when shopping.
- Shop Local: Support businesses in your community by purchasing locally made products.
- Have a Plan: Know what you’re getting before you go.
- Do Your Research: Check labels and company backgrounds.
- Know Your Terms:
- Made in Canada: At least 51% of the product’s content is Canadian.
- Product of Canada: 98% Canadian content with the last transformation of the product happening in Canada.
- 100% Canadian: All processing and labour are entirely Canadian.
- Local: Must be produced in the province or territory where its sold, or sold across provincial borders within 50 km of its original province or territory.
When in doubt, do your research. It never hurts to know more about what you’re spending your money on, and it definitely never hurts to support your fellow Canadian.
