Bone china is one of the most elegant and luxurious materials. We have all seen a picture of those fancy tea sets. But what exactly is bone china?
Bone china is a lightweight and durable material known for its creamy, white and opaque color. The critical difference it has from fine china is that bone china contains real bones (typically cow bone ash). This ingredient alters the bone china's properties, making it thinner and smoother than regular porcelain. To create bone china, you combine china clay, china stone and bone ash and fire them at a lower temperature than porcelain.
Bone china can create different tableware and tea ware, such as plates, bowls, mugs and teacups. It's break-resistant, microwave-safe, oven-safe and dishwasher-safe. Of course, it is much more expensive due to the cost of bone ash and extra labor costs. The quality depends on the amount of bone in the mixture. Keep an eye out because super high-quality products contain at least 30% bone ash.
